(надеюсь, ты на английском сразу вкуришь)

Goth-rock patriarchs Bauhaus formed in 1978 in Northampton, England. Originally calling themselves Bauhaus 1919 (after the "less is more" German architectural movement), Peter Murphy (vocals), Daniel Ash (guitar/sax) and brothers David (bass) and Kevin Haskins (drums) released their first single on the Small Wonder label in August 1979.

That single, "Bela Lugosi's Dead," a nine-minute epic of dark plodding bass lines punctuated by Murphy's sonorous, psychedelic vocals, gave the group instant credibility on the burgeoning U.K. goth scene. The band signed to the then-fledgling 4AD label and released a series of singles, followed by their first full-length, In the Flat Field, in late 1980.

In the fall of that year, Bauhaus played in America for the first time and jumped to the Beggars Banquet label, anticipating wider audience exposure. Their first album on Beggars Banquet, Mask, was released in 1981 and was followed in quick succession by 1982's The Sky's Gone Out. A 1982 remake of David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust," proved to be Bauhaus' biggest hit in the U.K.; the single peaked at No. 15 on the charts and broke the heretofore cult band into the mainstream.

Unfortunately, Murphy contracted viral pneumonia as the band was preparing to record its fourth full-length album. While Murphy recovered, the other members of Bauhaus scattered to work on solo material. As a result, Bauhaus' final studio album, Burning From the Inside, turned out to be an amalgam of individual projects rather than a collective effort by the band; Murphy only appeared on a handful of tracks.

In 1983, amid much speculation about the band's future, Bauhaus decided to call it quits. Murphy went on to work with Mick Karn in the experimental project Dali's Car before launching a solo career. Ash and the Haskins brothers achieved underground success in Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets. In 1998, 15 years after their breakup, the original members of Bauhaus reunited for a string of summer concerts.

A "best of" album, Crackle, was released on Beggars Banquet to coincide with the reunion. ~writed credit: Christina Cramer
